How to Pass the UK Theory Test First Time: A 2-Week Study Plan
The theory test rewards steady practice, not last-minute cramming. You need 43 out of 50 on the multiple-choice part and 44 out of 75 on hazard perception, and you must pass both in the same sitting.
Week 1: learn the content
- Days 1-2: Alertness, attitude and safety. These topics are about judgement, so read every explanation.
- Days 3-4: Road signs and markings. Learn shapes first: circles give orders, triangles warn, rectangles inform.
- Days 5-6: Rules of the road, motorways and vulnerable road users.
- Day 7: Redo every question you got wrong.
Week 2: simulate the test
- Take one timed 50-question mock each day. The real test gives you 57 minutes.
- Do not book until you score 45 or more (90%) on several mocks in a row. The pass mark is 43, and a buffer covers nerves.
- Practise hazard perception a little every day, not in one long session.
The day before
Light revision only. Check you have your photocard driving licence, know the route to the centre and plan to arrive early.
In the test
Read each question twice. Flag anything unsure and return to it. You can change answers until you finish.
Rules and fees change. Check GOV.UK for the latest information.
