How the UK car theory test works
Fees and rules change. Always check GOV.UK before booking. Only book through GOV.UK, as unofficial sites often charge more.
Part 1: multiple choice
You answer 50 questions in 57 minutes and need 43 correct. You can flag questions and return to them before you finish.
Part 2: hazard perception
You watch 14 video clips. Each has at least one developing hazard, and one clip has two. Click as soon as you notice something that could make you change speed or direction. The earlier you click, the more you score, up to 5 per hazard. Pass mark: 44 out of 75. Clicking continuously scores zero.
What to bring
Your photocard driving licence. Arrive early.
How to prepare
- Read the Highway Code, especially the 2022 changes.
- Practise every topic until you score 90% or more consistently.
