How Much Is the UK Theory Test and How Do You Book It?

6 October 2026 · 3 min read · Based on the Highway Code

The car theory test costs £23 at the time of writing, with no separate charge for the two parts. Check GOV.UK for the current fee before you book, as prices can change.

How to book

  1. Make sure you have a provisional driving licence.
  2. Book on GOV.UK, which is the official service.
  3. Choose a test centre and a date.
  4. Pay online and keep your confirmation.

Avoid look-alike sites

Some unofficial sites charge extra for the same booking. If the address does not end in gov.uk, it is not the official service.

What to bring

Your photocard provisional driving licence. Arrive early, as late arrivals may be turned away.

After you pass

Your pass certificate is valid for two years. You must pass your practical test within that time or you will have to take the theory test again.

Rules and fees change. Check GOV.UK for the latest information.
